AMU Vice Chancellor
Aligarh Muslim University’s vice chancellor is Naima Khatoon. In the university’s history, she is the first female vice-chancellor. After receiving her doctorate in psychology from Aligarh Muslim University, Khatoon began working as a lecturer in the psychology department in 1988. Additionally, from 1999 to 2000, she worked for a year as an associate professor at the National University of Rwanda. In 2006, she returned to Aligarh Muslim University as an associate professor before being promoted to professor.

As the first female vice chancellor in more than a century, Naima Khatoon was named vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
According to officials on Monday, Khatoon was appointed by the Ministry of Education (MoE) following clearance from President Droupadi Murmu, who is a visitor to the university.
According to them, permission was also requested from the Election Commission of India (ECI) because of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
First Women Appointed the Vice Chancelloes VC
The Election Commission of India, in its letter dated April 9, 2024, stated that it has no objection from the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) perspective to the appointment of the vice chancellor of AMU, provided that there be no publicity and that no political mileage be taken from it, according to a letter to this effect dated April 22, 2024, from the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
Five of the 20 qualified candidates were shortlisted by AMU’s highest decision-making body, the 27-member Executive Council (EC), on October 30, 2023. Thirty-six people applied for the VC position.
Mujahid Beg, one of the 36 applicants whose names were not chosen by the EC, petitioned President Murmu to “re-initiate the process afresh” and to disband the panel.
Surprisingly, the VC voted for his wife in addition to chairing the EC meeting. Free and fair elections are being hit again… Because his own wife is one of the candidates vying for the position of vice-chancellor, the VC did not announce his impartiality toward the applicants in order to allay any legitimate concerns regarding his independence and the fairness of the procedures,” Beg had stated.
In addition to Khatoon, the EC suggested the following names: renowned cardiologist and AMU professor M U Rabbani; biochemist and VC of Srinagar’s Cluster University Qayyum Husain; legal scholar and former VC of NALSAR University Faizan Mustafa; and professor Furqan Qamar of Jamia Millia Islamia University.

Officials said that when President Droupadi Murmu, the University’s Visitor, gave his approval, the Ministry of Education (MoE) authorized Khatoon’s appointment. On April 22, the news was made.
Furthermore, according to sources, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was enforced, which prompted a request for authorization from the Election Commission of India (ECI).
“For a five-year term, Naima Khatoon, the principal of Women’s College, has been named AMU’s vice chancellor. “A senior official told news agency PTI that the ECI has stated that the commission has no objection from the MCC angle to the proposal related to the appointment of the AMU VC, provided that no political mileage be derived from it.
Khatoon started her work at AMU as a lecturer in the same department in 1988 and later received her PhD in psychology. In 2006, she was elevated to the rank of professor, where she carried on with her studies. Prior to her recent appointment as the university’s vice chancellor, she served as the principal of the Women’s College in 2014.
