Charan Singh was born on December 23, 1902, in the village of Noorpur, District Hapur (formerly District Meerut), Uttar Pradesh, to a rural peasant Jat family and Teotia clan[2] (Erstwhile United Provinces of Agra and Oudh). [3] Charan Singh started politics as a member of Mohandas Gandhi’s Independence Movement. From 1931, he was a member of the Ghaziabad District Arya Samaj and the Meerut District Indian National Congress, for which he was imprisoned twice by the British. Prior to independence, he served in the United Provinces Legislative Assembly, which he was elected to in 1937.
